The stages of maternal health care
Pregnancy

Pregnancy signals the physiological and psychological changes that occur over a period of 40 weeks. In Nigeria, 9.2 million women and girls become pregnant each year. Complications such as maternal hypertensive disorders contribute to maternal deaths during pregnancy. Our database includes interventions like the use of Conditional Cash Transfers which encourage pregnant women to attend health screenings in order to receive cash bonuses.

    Additional Information
The policy was implemented shortly after the International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994. At the ICPD, the nations of world, including Nigeria, reached an understanding on the key concepts of reproductive health and reproductive rights. The conference highlighted that reproductive health is a right for all men, women and adolescents. The global community, at the ICPD, further agreed that reproductive health and rights are indispensable to people's health and development, and set the goal of achieving universal access to reproductive health information and services by 2015.

  • In 2001, Kano became the first state in the country to initiate free maternal services in all its secondary and tertiary health facilities. The services included in the free maternal care program include free antenatal care, assisted vaginal delivery (forceps and vacuum), free caesarean section (elective and emergency), free post abortion care services, free management of ectopic and free laparotomy for obstetric complications. Other programs include free treatment for the under 5 and free vesico-vaginal fistula repairs. These 3 programs are managed by the free maternal, child health and VVF repairs implementation committee that was set up by the State government in 2002.

  • The project aimed to reduce the spread, and mitigate the impact, of HIV infection by strengthening Nigeria's multi-sectoral response to the epidemic through the implementation of a comprehensive program that includes the creation of an enabling environment for a large scale response, and laying the foundation for scaling up HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services at the federal, state, and local levels. One of the project's outcome/Impact Indicators specifically relating to maternal health was for the HIV prevalence rate as measured among pregnant women not to exceed 8% by 2005.

    Additional Information
According to a report on the state of political priority for safe motherhood in Nigeria, another issue facing maternal health is the dearth of federal budgetary resources for maternal mortality reduction. While in 2004 for the first time the federal government provided a line item allocation for reproductive health, a portion of which was directed towards safe motherhood, the total amount for safe motherhood released was only around US $800 000, which some said was hardly enough to deal with a crisis of national scope.
