The Reproductive Health/Family Planning Service Delivery Project aimed to improve the Reproductive Health (RH) status of adults and adolescents in northern Nigeria, and to increase the utilization of services through a network of public- and private-sector facilities and community-based providers. During the program, Pathfinder built the capacity of 27 NGOs to offer quality Reproductive Health (RH) and Family Planning (FP) services through a network of over 130 clinics and 5,000 trained Community Based Distributors (CBDs).

The National Reproductive Health Policy and Strategy aims to provide the necessary guidance and framework for the promotion and implementation of reproductive health programmes and activities. The ultimate aim of this policy is to serve as an effective national platform for strengthening reproductive health activities in Nigeria and facilitating the achievement of relevant global and regional goals in the interest of improved health, well-being, and overall quality of lives of all peoples in Nigeria.

In 2001, Kano became the first state in the country to initiate free maternal services in all its secondary and tertiary health facilities. The services included in the free maternal care program include free antenatal care, assisted vaginal delivery (forceps and vacuum), free caesarean section (elective and emergency), free post abortion care services, free management of ectopic and free laparotomy for obstetric complications. Other programs include free treatment for the under 5 and free vesico-vaginal fistula repairs. These 3 programs are managed by the free maternal, child health and VVF repairs implementation committee that was set up by the State government in 2002.

The project aimed to reduce the spread, and mitigate the impact, of HIV infection by strengthening Nigeria's multi-sectoral response to the epidemic through the implementation of a comprehensive program that includes the creation of an enabling environment for a large scale response, and laying the foundation for scaling up HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services at the federal, state, and local levels. One of the project's outcome/Impact Indicators specifically relating to maternal health was for the HIV prevalence rate as measured among pregnant women not to exceed 8% by 2005.

The Nigerian Partnership for Safe Motherhood was established to link organisations advocating for safe motherhood. The MacArthur Foundation project was implemented to train advocates of safe motherhood in Nigeria.
